According to Studies, Kindle Fire First Legit Contender to iPad
Do you like this story?
While that may be a generalization, it’s looking like it might be an accurate one. A recent study conducted by ChangeWave indicates that as many as 65% of respondents planning on purchasing a tablet are looking forward to owning an iPad while 22% are planning on a Kindle Fire.
The next most popular unit is the Samsung Galaxy Tab with only 4% of the retail interest. This is huge news for Samsung who has been the main competition for the iPad to date.
It might be due to the price difference. People who just can’t afford or justify the cost of moving to an iPad may be looking to the Kindle Fire as a reasonable alternative. This would make sense when the Samsung Galaxy Tab is at a similar price point to Apple’s flagship tablet.
ChangeWave does make a very important distinction in the analysis of their survey data. They indicated that “impacting is not beating” and that is a significant difference. But the market is huge and there are plenty of customers to go around. They serve two very different areas of the market and will make each one happy in their own way. I doubt Apple is very worried anyway. With Amazon expecting to deliver 4 million units this quarter they aren’t even coming close to the 12-13 million iPads Apple is projecting to sell. Not that 4 million is anything to sneeze at.
My instinct still says that any people will be annoyed by the limitations faced with the Kindle Fire and that tablet will be used as an appetizer for those folks looking to get their first tablet.
Competition drives innovation so this really is good news for all of us no matter how you look at it.
