Those of you looking to scope on potential baby bumps or be the first to hear who is dating who after divorcing so-in-so and getting late-night plastic surgery to hide the fact that they are actually an elite member of a secret race of super-spy aliens will be in luck! The New York Times has
delivered the news that American Media Inc. is bringing a digital version of the popular National Enquirer tabloid direct to your iPad.
For the last 70 years, inquiring minds have turned to the National Enquirer for their gossip and the publisher is hoping their new app labeled ‘Enquirer Plus’ will invite those people and more into the fold. It is their particular goal to engage younger readers as they currently write for a reader with an average age of 46.5. To survive and thrive in a world where new media platforms dominate, the National Enquirer understands that there is a need to broaden their appeal and reach the same demographics as hip news sources TMZ and PerezHilton.
Marketing materials from American Media indicate we can expect “More Gossip, More Fun!” from this new app, with hints toward increased video and multimedia content. It also appears that the digital version of the publication will avoid the human-interest type stories and focus more on what they describe as “juicier fare written in an irreverent, youth-oriented tone.”
One theory the group has is that by allowing digital delivery of the publication, a certain amount of anonymity will spur the sales. Those who love gossip and like the entertainment value may feel silly or embarrassed picking up the paper copy in stores.
One released, Enquirer Plus will be available with a subscription cost of USD $0.99 cents a week or $2.99 per month.
American Media has recently emerged from Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection with a successful restructuring that included debt reduction and changes in management. The publisher does enjoy other successful brands with the publishing of popular magazine titles, Star, OK! and Shape.
