4Towers Onslaught, like its predecessor 4Towers Combo, is a tower defense game where players place four basic tower types in different combinations in order to destroy waves of incoming enemies. 4Towers Onslaught also includes persistent power-ups that can be purchased with in-game currency called biomatter that is awarded at the completion of each level. These power-ups can be used to increase the strength, range, rate of fire, and other tower abilities. They range in price from cheap to very expensive so extended play is required to take full advantage of these power-ups.
As it was with the first 4Towers game, 4Towers Onslaught focuses on building intelligent combinations. The individual tower types are the standard tower defense types players will have seen in many other tower defense games, but when two towers are placed in special double placements they will compliment each other and create a new, more powerful tower type with its own unique abilities and effects. Even the purchased power-ups can be used in different combinations and changed from level to level to give the player a boost exactly where they need it. Using different tower combinations is essential in progressing from level to level. Different enemy types are susceptible to different types of towers and the player must take that into account as they are building their defenses and making the tower combos.
Aside from building combos, the game plays out like most other tower defense games. Enemies progress in waves and each level ends with an enemy boss that is larger and more difficult to defeat. Currency is awarded for each enemy creep that is killed and that money can be used to build new towers.
The neon art style of 4Towers is not new to the tower defense genre but it is successfully executed. The gameplay is smooth and the abstract-yet-organic design of the enemies is very cool. There are subtle design cues built into the game that make it easy to identify the different tower and enemy types and the interface works smoothly without many hitches in the heat of battle. It is easy to read the situation and react to it accordingly making the game fun to play and saving the player from confusion and frustration. There are lots of tower defense games out there and not all of them are great. 4Towers Onslaught is certainly one of the more enjoyable tower defense titles out there and it merits a looks from players looking for a new game in the genre to enjoy.
