Apple Patent Suggests “Spaces” technology for touch screen devices. (iPad 3)
Patently Apple has discovered a patent filed by Apple in 2009. The patent suggests that the feature spaces which is currently used on Apple desktops, will be seen on the iPad 3.Spaces allows users to have up to sixteen virtual desktops on one screen, with its default set at four. Having the ability to move amongst screens while different programs are running on each greatly increases productivity.
Relating to our recent article about iPads in the workplace; this would be an excellent integration into the iPad 3 as iPads are continually adopted into the business world.
Apple’s patent FIG shows Apple’s vision of having the device respond to a two finger pinch at a location on a touch screen device. This location would be a corner of the display, where the touch-sensitive surface is distinct from the display itself.
FIG depicts moving program windows between different spaces while also displaying the full workspace views currently running.
The user would be able to organize running apps and programs, while windows can be moved from one virtual screen to another by simply dragging them to the edge of the screen. This would allow the iPad to perform more complex tasks, allowing more than one app open at a time.
Swiping with multiple fingers would move the display from one virtual desktop to the next.If you’ve ever had the ability to use spaces on your Mac; then you should be familiar with the technology, and able to see how useful this could be if integrated into the iPad 3. Fans are also hoping this technology makes it onto the iPhone 5. Rumors have the iPhone 5 being released in the summer of 2011; or early 2012.
Spaces would be welcomed with open arms by Apple users, especially for the iPad 3 and iPhone 5 operating systems.
