iPad 3 News: Kevin Kenney & Carbon Fiber Outer Shells

Carbon Fiber Rumors & The iPad 3

We have reason to believe that Apple may be getting closer to equipping their devices with carbon fiber enclosures.  Reports show that Senior Composites Engineer Kevin Kenney was recently hired on by Apple.  This sheds light that it is possible we could see these carbon fiber enclosures on the iPad 3.
Kenney worked previously at Kestrel Bicycles where he was credited with being the pioneer of developing the world’s first all carbon fiber bicycle frame.  He’s definitely the man for the job when it comes to designing a product out of carbon fiber.
Rumors about Apple’s use of carbon fiber date all the way back to 2008, suggesting its replacement of aluminum parts on the Macbook Air.
Carbon fiber is notorious for its lightweight properties and high tensile strength.
In 2009 a patent was filed (under Kenney’s name) indicating that Apple was indeed researching carbon fiber composites for its outer cases.  The iPad 3 and other popular devices could benefit dearly from the use of this patent.  Carbon fiber is stronger, lighter, enjoys low thermal expansion; and is notably edgy and aesthetically pleasing.
Carbon Fiber Case

If you followed rumors prior to the release of the iPad 2 you may remember two separate reports about prototypes that were developed with carbon fiber backing.  We think they are close to actually implementing these casings, and hiring Kenney is something to give them the extra momentum.
If Apple is looking to significantly reduce weight and thickness, this is the product to use.  We cannot confirm its release with the iPad 3 based on the hiring of a sole individual, but Apple is definitely in the mature stages of R&D at this point.
Do you like the look of carbon fiber, and would you like to see it on the iPad 3?
