The user begins their Workout Trainer journey by either creating an account, or logging in via Facebook. From there they must then choose the intensity of workouts to do (which can be changed at any time), as well duration. The user is then presented with a list of goals, such as weight loss or building muscle, and asked to choose what they wish to achieve.
Workouts are divided into free and ‘Pro’, which the user has to pay to unlock. Those wishing to use free workouts are amply catered for, and won’t go wanting. In fact, the list of free workouts is so impressive I’m not sure how long it would take to see them all. Also included is the ‘Shakerciser’, which requires the user to shake their iOS device, and this shuffles several random exercises together and creates a workout routine.
Speaking of routines, when the user sets one going each exercise is displayed on-screen, with the option to view a demonstration video via YouTube. It’s very slick, and the only niggle is that the personal trainer voices used are terrible, with absolutely no emotion or hint of encouragement.
Workout Trainer also adds a whole host of social network features for the user to take advantage of. Users can see other people with the app, be it nearby or worldwide, and send a follow request a la Twitter. Successful workouts can also be published on Twitter and Facebook, and even sent to others via email and sms. Community created workouts are also present, so the user can download what others are doing and see if it works for them. To top it all off the app even works with Apple TV and Airplay.
Workout Trainer appears to be the perfect app for those serious about their health and fitness. The volume of exercises, the social interaction and the slick user interface all add up to something that is well worth a look.
