UK’s ITV to Apple: Refrain From Using the iTV Name

itv
Britain’s biggest commercial broadcaster has issued a warning to Apple indicating that they own the rights to the “itv” name and thus they should not make plans to brand their upcoming television solution (whatever that may be) with their trademark.

Whether the UK-based ITV win in court against Apple remains to be seen. Certainly there is the potential, but the services may be different enough that a court rules in favor of Apple. Either way, you can bet that this isn’t the first Apple has heard of this and they have a plan.
But let’s not forget that this is all theoretical right now. Apple hasn’t released an iTV. They haven’t even confirmed suspicions that there is a television related solution in the works over in Cupertino so it seems slightly premature to be worried about what Apple may (or may not) call it. Some best guesses say that it will stay in line with the Apple TV name and just be an evolution like any other product upgrade.
Ever since Steve Jobs told his biographer that he had cracked the problems of current televisions we have all been wondering exactly what that will mean for us as the consumer. Some reports as late as last week indicate that the breakthrough is related to a voice-activated (based on Siri) as well as motion-activated interface that some claim is already being tested by major telecom companies, Rogers and Bell.
I think most of us assume that Siri will be involved, but we are more curious what it’s going to look like. Debates rage over whether Apple will now be producing television sets themselves or whether the innovation will be an evolution of the set-top box like the current Apple TV. The latter seems far more likely given the core-competencies at Apple currently and the limited appeal of having to replace your current television to take advantage of the technology.
