Join a Narcotics Smuggling Ring in Narco Sub HD
Do you like this story?
For a game with a wildly inappropriate theme, the actual gameplay is quite tame. To be honest, I was hoping for something like Lemonade Tycoon with a more risqué storyline, but what I got when I played was a submarine navigation game where the goal is to steer a slow-moving submarine from place to place while avoiding an array of much faster boats.
The submarine is controlled with two arrows for rotating directions, and two arrows for moving both forwards and backwards, which is difficult to get used to and could probably use some improvement. The goal is to steer your submarine to the pick up point where you will receive a package, and then you need to get to the drop off point as well, avoiding all kinds of ships moving at different speeds and other obstacles.
When you run into a boat, you are captured and lose a submarine. Each level provides a limited number of submarines, and when those run out, it’s back to the beginning. Luckily, you earn money for completing missions, which can be used to purchase upgrades like additional submarines (aka lives).
The game starts out with an overly simplistic tutorial before throwing you into the fast-paced action of several boats going by, which doesn’t allow for enough time to learn the controls. The game could definitely be improved by starting at a slower pace.
Narco Subs does get easier to control after you get the hang of it, but it is a slower paced game that seems to be in conflict with the theme. If you enjoy games that require patience and careful maneuvering to complete, and are a fan of obstacle avoidance puzzles, then you might like this game.
What I liked: The concept of the game is different, and I did really enjoy the backstory of how it was based on a drug trafficking article written by Erik Lacitis of the Seattle Times. It’s a great idea.
What I didn’t like: There’s a two-player mode that requires both players to use the same iPad, each holding one side. This didn’t work out well at all, and it’s basically non-functional.
To buy or not to buy: This could potentially appeal to serious obstacle-avoidance puzzle lovers, so if you fall into that category, I’d highly recommend checking out the lite version to decide if you want to purchase this game.
