This comprehensive and interactive dinosaur encyclopedia book blew me away with its fully animated dinosaurs, photo realistic pictures, and narration from Stephen Fry, who does a wonderful job telling eager listeners all about dinosaurs who lived in the Triassic, Jurassic, and Cretaceous periods.
Pages are filled with carefully researched information that comes from expert paleontologists and accompanied by gorgeously realistic photos and animations. Whether you’re new to dinosaurs or a dinosaur expert, you’re sure to learn something when you step Inside the World of Dinosaurs.
I know a fair amount about dinosaurs, and though I’m not particularly interested in them, this book drew me in with its abundance of information. I had a hard time putting it down!
The book organizes the dinosaurs into the era that they’re from: Triassic, Jurassic, and Cretaceous. Tapping on one of these periods on the bottom navigation bar will open a list of all of the dinosaurs that lived in that time. For example, when I open up Triassic, I see dinosaurs like Herrerasaurus, Coelophysis, and Plateosaurus, all dinosaurs I’m fairly unfamiliar with.
When I tap on the dinosaur I want to learn more about, this time, the Herrerasaurus, the page opens with a narration and a 3D model of the dinosaur, who was a small, fast-paced theropod living in the Valley of the Moon in Argentina. It then shows illustrations of the prey the Herrerasaurus ate, gives a look at how it was built, and a displays a battle of two dinosaurs.
When the narration on the Herrarasaurus is complete, the book automatically moves on to the next dinosaur. In all, there are 60 expertly modeled, photo realistic dinosaurs, and 310 fully interactive (you can rotate them in any direction) 3D models. The visuals are great, but there’s also more than 200 pages of researched text to go along with the pictures. There’s a total of five hours of narration from Stephen Fry, plus 84 videos and historical pictures, 60 dinosaur sounds, and more.
Essentially, this app provides a wealth of information on dinosaurs. In fact, I’m not sure I’ve ever seen such a thorough dinosaur book, electronic or not, and it’s put together in a way that makes it ultra fun to read and explore.
Navigation is simple – there’s a bar at the bottom of the screen and an index you can tap to see a list of all available dinosaurs. Tapping any one opens the proper page.
There’s a timeline which gives a comparison of when all of the dinosaurs lived, and a gallery where you can learn all about famous dinosaur hunters. Finally, there’s a section of articles on subjects like the diets of dinosaurs, dinosaur eggs, and dinosaur extinction.
This app is a great companion tool for any child who is currently learning about dinosaurs in school, and it’s also perfect for boys and girls who want to find out more about dinosaurs on their own. Any child or adult with even an inkling of interest in dinosaurs is going to love this book.
