Riding on Apple’s Success KAIST Improves Page -Turning Experience

Anyone who has used a digital book for research or reference purposes knows that flipping around in an e-book can be annoying. The design interface of digital reading is significantly less convenient than a physical book. Sometimes, you want to use a couple of fingers as bookmarks and flip back and forth between pages. Korean-based technology company Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) is working on a solution that would make digital books more like paper books.

According to their website, KAIST has developed a technology called the “Smart E-book System” that will allow smart phone ant tablet users the ability to “effortlessly flip through the pages of an e-book or cross-reference its content” the way they could with physical books or magazines.

Conventional touch screen displays use technologies that lock finger movement with the screen of the display. The Smart E-Book System uses multi-touch gesturing to offer recognition beyond the screen.

The system detects touch on the bezel of smart phones and tablets and connects them with events on the screen itself, “thereby preserving compatibility with traditional e-book interfaces while providing users with new functions.”

The system will allow users to glance through large number of pages quickly, flip back and forth between pages and choose how many pages to turn at a time using one, two or three fingers.

The company’s website specifically states that this technology is for smart phones and “tablet PCs”, which causes one to assume that the system is not meant for the iPad; however, the video below shows the technology being demonstrated using Apple’s tablet, so there is a chance that iPad owners will see a better, more realistic way of reading digital books in the near future.
