Retro cameras are so hip right now, but the problem is finding one that still works and then keeping it stocked in vintage films and lenses. With the advent of mobile photography – iPhone photography specifically – users can now easily emulate hundreds of different retro and toy camera types with just a handful of apps. Pop Camera is one of the newest additions to this very popular genre and while it might offer some things that are already offered in other apps, its funky interface and outrageous cameras make it well worth considering for those shutterbugs looking for something new to have some fun with.

Pop Camera lets users choose from several different “cameras,” each with their own unique shooting style. They range from the Pop Gold camera that takes double exposures to the Pop Max camera that takes 16 sequential shots and composes them into one large 4×4 image. By using the different cameras, the user will get different photo sizes and compositions, all depending on how many sequential shots the camera takes. Once a camera is chosen, the user can choose from tons of emulated retro films that act as filters applied to the photos taken.

When taking the photos, the user can choose to use either the front or back facing camera, and can turn the flash on and off. Unfortunately, the volume up button can’t be used to snap the shutter and the user has to use the on-screen button to do so. Once the user has snapped the photo, it is saved to their photo album and the user can share it from the photo album or directly from the app itself by logging in to Flickr, Facebook, or Twitter.

The Pop Camera interface is so bold and colorful that it makes it a pure joy just to use the app. The photos do come out really well, although they aren’t at the highest resolutions available on some devices. The ability to take high-res photos is in the works, though, according to the developer. There are lots of filters and cameras to combine and play with and users will have a great time finding the perfect ones to get that great photo.
