McGraw-Hill Brings High School Textbooks To The iPad

Textbook publisher McGraw-Hill has just announced the addition of five high school level math and science textbooks, designed specifically for the iPad, to Apple’s new iBooks Textbooks feature. Starting now, teens can learn about Algebra, Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Geometry from their iPad.
With today’s Apple education event, where it was announced that iBooks will start offering textbooks at $15 each, McGraw-Hill was first on the scene with its five high school level books. The company plans to double its program offering throughout the upcoming year.
“The exciting new titles we are offering build on McGraw-Hill’s successful expansion of digital learning platforms across a wide variety of devices,” said Harold McGraw III, chairman, president and chief executive officer of The McGraw-Hill Companies.
The initial release of titles that are available today include Common Core State Standard editions of Algebra 1 and Geometry, as well as, Biology, Chemistry Matter and Change, and Physics Principles and Problems.
The books feature interactive images and 3D animations where students can zoom in on an image, rotate it and reveal additional information about it. The books also include interactive supplemental slideshows that offer videos, quizzes glossary terms and study tools, like highlighting text, flashcards and cross-referencing of terms.
All textbooks in Apple’s new iBooks Textbooks store will be $14.99. Considering that K-12 textbooks cost as much as $100 each, it is surprising to see textbook publishers jumping on this bandwagon. AllThingsD recently spoke with McGraw-Hill’s CEO, Terry McGraw, who ran down the way the company was able to justify offering the books at such a reduced price through iBooks. Volume is the key word in this situation.
Normally, McGraw-Hill sells text books to school districts for $75 each, but those books are supposed to last five years. By offering them directly to students at only $15, the publishing company will make $75 over a five-year period anyway.
The first run of McGraw-Hill textbooks are available now from Apple’s new iBooks Textbook section.
