Rolling Stone Magazine to Join iPad

Rolling Stone Magazine
There is a reason why Dr. Hook sang that the thrill that will “get’cha” is when you get your picture on the cover of the Rolling Stone! Published by the digital-media skeptical Wenner Media, Rolling Stone magazine has earned a reputation for being one of the true measures of musical success. If you’ve been featured, your musical contribution has been validated.
It is certain that music lovers will unite and excite with the announcement that they are releasing an iPad app version of their feature “The Beatles: The Ultimate Album-by-Album Guide” and the follow-up news that digital subscriptions for the print version of Rolling Stone magazine will come available in early 2012. The founder of Wenner Media, Jann Wenner, has spoken out publicly on more than one occasion stating that he feels other outlets have rushed into the digital media market so this new move comes as a bit of a welcome surprise.
It isn’t that Wenner didn’t think tablets were worth considering. His view was that print publications had a certain reputation for quality when it comes to images and layout and he wasn’t prepared to compromise that for digital delivery.
So what (or who) changed his mind? Maybe it was the recent success of Newsstand following the release of iOS 5. It could just as easily be that he watched the numbers roll in as Amazon, Indigo and Barnes and Noble released an updated series of eReaders and light-duty tablets to rave reviews. Both of those things certainly suggest that consumers are embracing the idea of digital content delivery.
So far, only the iPad is supported for this new venture. Speculation says that Wenner just won’t be happy with the small 7″ screens but it could just as easily be a cautious toe-dip into the digital waters and something had to come first.
I am delighted because this means one less piece (or collection of pieces more realistically) that I have to wait for in the mail and cart around with me… because I prefer reading things on my iPad but I just couldn’t give up my Rolling Stone magazine!
