No Need To Play Solo, Now You Can Let Your Friends Sit In On A Jam Session With You

The iPad has done wonderful things for rock stars, aspiring musicians and introverted musical geniuses. There are apps for recording songs, learning to play an instrument and all manner of music-based tools. With all of this musical technology at ones fingertips, it is easy to forget the joy of playing in a band with other people. Rockmate puts groups of musicians back together to jam out on their next big hit together with multi-player instruments that can be tapped out simultaneously.
With Eddie on the drums, Mike on lead guitar, Axe on rhythm guitar and Francois on keyboards, Rockmate lets up to four people play their own virtual instrument. Chord progressions are preprogrammed so players don’t even have to know how to compose music to write a beautiful pop hit. There are 24 different pedal effects, drum sounds, synthesizer options and chord progressions, all listed by song style. For example, “Sweet Metal” turns up the distortion on the guitar effects and puts some heavy punch on the virtual drums while “Sappy” takes out all the effects on the guitars and turns the keyboard synthesizer into an electric bass.

Each preset song style can be fine-tuned to the player’s personal taste. Guitar pedals can have more or less reverb or distortion, drums can be changed between Grunge, Metal, Electro and so on. The volume levels of each instrument can be adjusted individually as well.
Instruments can also be recorded and looped. If the drummer didn’t make it to practice and you need a basic beat, record a few seconds of snare-and-high hat sounds and loop it while playing those sweet guitar riffs. Full songs can also be recorded and overdubbed. For musicians recording a song alone, bass, guitar and drum tracks can be recorded individually and added together with the overdub feature.
The only thing missing from this app is vocals. There is no mic feature or external recording feature to allow for adding the lyrics. However, songs can be exported through email, or by dragging them from your iTunes file-sharing feature.

What I liked: This is the first music app I have seen that allows multiple users at once. It can really be fun to experiment with the preset song styles to see what you and your friends come up with.  The sound quality of each instrument is surprisingly good. They sound fairly realistic.
What I didn’t like: Singers are always getting left out of music apps. It would be great to see a mic option so that players could record lyrics by using the iPad’s internal microphone.
To buy or not to buy: The app is on sale for a mere $0.99 until December 21. At that price, it is almost a crime not to buy it. Regularly priced at $2.99, it is still a great deal on a fun song-writing app.
