Logic Pro and MainStage come to Mac App Store
Do you like this story?
Logic Pro, Apple’s professional digital audio workstation (DAW), moves to version 9.1.6 and is available for $200. This version contains a few bug fixes, but no new features. (All the expected Logic Pro features are there including guitar amps and stompbox effects and Flex Time editing.) Current Logic Pro 9 owners will be offered the same version through Software Update. The download weighs in at around 700MB.
MainStage 2 is Apple’s live-performance tool and moves to version 2.2. It costs $30 and offers such new features as the ability to take advantage of Macs with four or more processor cores, a new template picker, a new Assignments & Mapping view, and larger interface elements. There is no upgrade pricing for current MainStage owners. Each appliation requires that you be running Mac OS X 10.6.8 or later.
Purchase either application and you can download Apple’s entire 25GB loop and instrument library (comprised of Apple’s six Jam Pack packages) for no additional charge. (These loops and instruments can also be used with GarageBand.) If you like, you can choose to download items from the sound library a la carte.
Prior to today’s release, Logic Pro was available only as part of Logic Studio (), an application suite that includes Logic Pro 9, MainStage 2, Soundtrack Pro 3, Compressor, and WaveBurner. Compressor () is now available separately on the Mac App Store for $50 and the majority of Soundtrack Pro 3’s features have been rolled into Final Cut Pro X (). Logic Studio is still available from Apple’s online retail store for $499. Apple’s Logic Express 9 has reached the end of the road. Now that Logic Pro 9 is being offered at the same $200 price as Logic Express, Apple plans to eliminate the Express version from its catalog.
Updated to include information about Logic Express' end-of-life.
