Learn the Value of Kindness in The Lion and the Mouse

Little Fables is a company that brings classic children’s tales and parables to the iPad in an interactive, digital form. You’ve probably heard the tale of the mouse, the lion, and their unlikely friendship, and now your children can learn the story too, right on the iPad with stylized graphics and interactive elements.
This telling of the Lion and the Mouse features the same classic story that we know – the lion, who is king of the beasts, takes pity on the hungry mouse and helps him sate his hunger with berries. In turn, the mouse promises the lion help and this friendship saves the lion from a tangle of vines.
The vector graphics in the story are simplistic, which I appreciate, but maybe a bit too simple, consisting mostly of silhouettes and otherwise blank pages. There are only a few colors on every page, but animations help to give the story more depth. Touching the mouse causes him to squeak, while other elements move, make noise, and change colors.
There are some fun features to take advantage of in the app. In addition to the standard read to me, autoplay, and read to myself modes, you can record your voice or your child’s voice within the story. There are currently no activities available, but that’s a feature that the developer plans to add to the app with an update.
As in other versions of the story, the message of the story is that no matter how small or large we are, we all have something to contribute. Also, the story emphasizes the importance of both friendship and kindness, making this a good option for an informative bedtime story.

What I liked: The extra addition that allows children or parents to record themselves is a fun option. I also liked many of the color changing and noise making animations that were included in the story.
What I didn’t like: Music plays throughout the story, but it stops with each page turn. This was very jarring, and it seems like it could be fixed to play in the background without interruption when pages are turned. I couldn’t find a pause button, which would be a helpful addition.
To buy or not to buy: This app is only $0.99, so it’s not breaking the bank if you’re looking for a simple parable for your child. I would suggest taking a good look at the art style, because it’s a bit different compared to other children’s books in the App Store.
