Offering old-school point and click adventuring with all the challenge (and the humor).
With a name like Kaptain Brawe: A Brawe New World, it’s clear from the outset that this game is a little different from the norm. It’s a game with a great sense of humor for one thing.
Previously a PC point and click adventure, Kaptain Brawe: A Brawe New World follows the tale of Kaptain Brawe, a Space Police officer on a mission to rescue two kidnapped alien scientists. It sounds like serious business but it actually forms the basis of a very entertaining storyline. The humor is reminiscient of Lucasarts and classic Telltale Games titles. Throughout, a delightful cartoon style keeps things just as light visually. Over 40 different locations can be explored plus players will find themselves switching between three different characters as they meet up with numerous other colorful personalities.
Less cutesy is that of the puzzles. They’re very old-school in nature and pretty awkward at times. Much of it is focused on finding items, questioning characters and then combining everything correctly. Controlling everything is easy enough ith relevant taps keeping things simple and intuitive (helped by a useful tutorial) but actually knowing what works in which situation isn’t always entirely logical.
There is fortunately a casual difficulty level that offers numerous hints and a question mark that can be tapped to reveal everything on screen that can be interacted with, but there were still a few exceptionally frustrating puzzles to tackle. The logical puzzles are frequently satisfying but some really don’t make anywhere near as much sense as they should, making looking for a walkthrough rather tempting.
For the old-school and hardened point and click adventure veteran, none of this will be too annoying but it is something to bear in mind for those looking for a more casual gaming experience. Overall, Kaptain Brawe: A Brawe New World is worth a look for those after a challenging yet humorous adventure.
