GoCal for Google – iPhone and iPad app review

If, like me, you’re a bit of an organizational junkie then you know what kind of affliction that can be, always on the hunt for the latest, greatest tool to help manage your time when it comes to obligations and play time.
This is why I use, in addition to a day planner, a desk calendar,  several wall calendars and several calendar-related iPhone apps. And yet I’m always seeking more, always on the hunt for the perfect app that will organize my life into something easy and successful.
Enter GoCal for Google – a handy calendar app that pledges “productive solutions for your Google Calendar.”
GoCal may not be organizational Nirvana but it does have some really useful tools. The app features three different notification ways to keep you up-to-date on your schedule: alerts, email or text (yes, you can even utilize all three at once).
It works by synchronizing and integrating your Google calendar with the iPhone, iPad and iPod’s native calendar.  You can update your schedule on your mobile device and when you cue it up on another (or your desktop), it’s instantly updated on another.  The event display is also customizable–view by day, week or month. Bonus: You can sync with as many Google calendars as you want and also use the app to invite people to various events.

What I liked – The ability to sync both the Google calendar and iPhone calendar is great. It won’t matter which app you open in a hurry to type in a quick reminder about something–it’ll show up here. The interface is also very clean and intuitive–no unnecessary bells and whistles, just easy tap-and-edit functions. You can even sync up to three years’ worth of calendars–a nice touch for those of us who like to reference old schedules or plan way ahead.
What I didn’t like: You can update your Google calendar on your desktop and have it sync with this app–but not vice versa. For someone like me who’s constantly jumping between devices that’s a big shortcoming.
To buy or not to buy: Yes–although with its $4.99 price tag, it’d be nice if this app offered a few other functions, namely a separate “notes” section or the ability to email your calendar to someone else.
