What if Machiavelli had Invented Scrabble? Meet War of Words for iOS.

The preconception persists that crossword and Scrabble enthusiasts are retiring sorts who would never engage in underhanded tactics to reach that triple word score tile. War of Words puts that worn out idea to rest. This universal app by Wolf Studios will attract the many who have abandoned Words With Friends in frustration after realizing they couldn’t blow anything up.
War of Words uses Game Center integration to offer the same Pass and Play gameplay mode that made Words With Friends a huge success. The addition of action tiles to War of Words boosts the game’s mechanics up to eleven.

The action tiles, which include bomb, thief, and barricade tiles, affect both offensive and defensive aspects of gameplay.

War of Words, or “Words with Bombs” as it is affectionately known around my house, has everything its predecessors offer and much more. It’s rather brilliant that players don’t find out about all of the action tiles up front because suddenly an opponent will use a tile that you didn’t even know existed. That’s right. The hunter has become the hunted.
War of Words also offers more game boards in almost any configuration you can imagine. These boards affect strategy because start tiles, barricades, and other little details vary. Everything about War of Words coalesces to ensure the game entertains in the long term, and doesn’t become predictable or boring after a few rounds.
War of Words is available for download in the App store for $1.99, but the satisfaction you will get from watching your unsuspecting opponent’s word explode is priceless.

What I liked: War of Words offers an impressive UI that makes gameplay seamless and fun.
What I didn’t like: I didn’t like having my words blown up. I would have liked to have access to more letters to work with. Sometimes I got stuck with an abundance of action tiles and no letters, and it was difficult to form a word.
To buy or not to buy: War of Words offers an ad-supported version for free, so all word game fans should check it out.
