Little Fox Gets His Wish – iPad App Review

From Rosie’s Walk to Aesop’s The Fox and the Grapes, foxes are usually depicted in children’s books as morally lax. The protagonist of Little Fox Gets His Wish for iPad, is no exception.
The Little Fox’s wish is simple: he wants to block out the sun. He goes to great lengths, including stealing, to get what he wants. Little Fox meets a variety of animals along the way who advise him during his adventure.

Little Fox may be crafty, but his attempts to blot out the sun are so ill-conceived that children may find him amusing.

The app’s UI is easy for kids to navigate. The story text can be toggled on or off during the reading process. The book utilizes the iPad’s capabilities well. Some of the pages include hot spots for children to interact with, and at one point the child must use the iPad’s tilt controls to navigate a hot air balloon. The app also includes a help screen.
The book also includes “sleeping mode,” an unusual option that reads the story aloud with the screen darkened. While it may not be advisable to leave a young child alone in a darkened room while an iPad reads him to sleep, it might be fun to try with proper supervision.

Download Little Fox Gets His Wish for iPad from the App Store for $1.99.
What I liked: The illustrations were attractive, and the story includes a number of animals not usually featured in kid’s books, like the shrew and the weasel.
What I didn’t like: The book ends very abruptly. The ending lacks the definition necessary for a fable, and the conclusion needed for a good story.
To buy or not to buy: The story is most appropriate for 3 to 5-year-olds. It will likely appeal most to children who love animals and fairy tales. Parents should know that not only does Little Fox steal, but he also drinks a beer (then makes a sour face) and uses a bow to shoot down birds. While some parents may see these behaviors as harmless in the context of the book, parents who object to their inclusion might want to skip this title.
