Learn an Important Lesson in Peterkin Meets A Star HD – iPad App Review

Peterkin Meets A Star HD is the latest offering from PicPocket Books that tells a tale about a young boy who snatches a star from the sky and brings it home.
If you will pardon the play on words, the star of this story may be a little boy, but the animals that are his pets and friends (a hedgehog and a bunny) are also very sweet to look at and adorable in each illustration.

The story has an important message that is well communicated but very difficult to summarize. Through a series of events in the book, the little boy learns that even though he was very careful and cautious in taking care of the star, the sparkling gem wasn’t his to take and had consequences (in this case, making the star very sad).
This app solves the very thing I’ve been complaining about when it comes to many of the interactive children’s books: the first few screens you open give a few hints about using the interactive features. In the case of this app, items you can interact with will appear to sparkle.
It would be nice to see more interactive features, but if you approach this app more as a storybook than an activity book you won’t be disappointed.

What I liked: To small children stars are really special and magical. I love that there is a story that makes them feel as if they are within reach.

What I didn’t like: There is a slight hesitation before the narrator begins on each page that does affect the feeling of continuity and makes the story feel almost a little choppy.

To buy or not to buy: This is a lovely story that will be enjoyed especially by young children.
