Jobs canned release of iPhone 5: Report

THE tech world awaited its arrival with bated breath. But instead, out came an update of the current version.
The iPhone 5 was the subject of much speculation before Apple killed all the buzz surrounding it with the launch of the iPhone 4S, which was released in Singapore last month.
Many insiders and experts believed an iPhone 5 with a bigger screen and new slimmer look would be launched by the technology giant.
But it has since emerged that the rumours and speculation may well have had some substance.
An unnamed industry source told BusinessInsider.com that had it not been for the intervention of the late Steve Jobs, the phone would have been in the market now.
Mr Jobs, 56, Apple's co-founder, died last month after a long battle with pancreatic cancer.
The source was quoted as saying that iPhone 5 was real and that it was shelved just months before the iPhone 4S was announced, Daily Mail reported.
Apple engineers known to the source believed just three months before the iPhone 4S was released that a new fully redesigned iPhone would be Apple's next big announcement.
It is believed that Mr Jobs - who was known for his fiery temper - was unhappy with the phone's bigger screen because it "fragmented" iPhones.
There were also problems with its battery life, the report said.
The source claims to have spent about two weeks with one prototype of the new phone, which was much flatter than the current version.
Its screen was 4 inches across, making it bigger than the current screen of iPhone 4S, which is 2.31 inches.
It is also believed that it was supposed to have a 10-megapixel lens. And like the iPad2, the new phones were supposed to have aluminium backs.

 Better screen, better colours

The source claims that the iPhone 5 was supposed to have a better screen with better colours.
He told the magazine that the home button of the prototype was not a physical press button.
"You could touch it and hold it and physically reboot the device," he was quoted as saying.
And the new phone did have a personal assistant. But unlike the one on iPhone 4S, which is called Siri, it was just called "Assistant".
But Apple fans may not have to wait for long for the fifth version of the phone. It is expected to be released next year, although the date is still mere speculation.
Meanwhile, Apple has released a software update to fix a problem that is shortening the battery life of some iPhones, iPads and iPods, AP reported.
Apple has said that a small number of customers have reported lower-than-expected battery life on devices running on its iOS 5 operating system.
That's the software that comes with the iPhone 4S and was available as a free upgrade for some older devices - both iPads, the iPhone 3GS and 4 and the two most recent models of the iPod Touch.
Apple released version 5.0.1 last week to fix bugs it found with the software. Users can get the update by connecting to iTunes.
Other changes in the update include better voice recognition for Australians using dictation.
