Innocent Cornelius was enjoying the sweet taste and wisdom of a fortune cookie when out of nowhere, an alien invasion struck. The cookie advised him to take action, so he grabbed his plasma sword (earned by saving chewing gum comics) to wage war on the invaders.
In this infinite runner game set in a fun, retro-futuristic world, it’s your job to help Cornelius run, jump, and slide to avoid obstacles while slaying robot aliens and collecting rewards.
As in most infinite running/platformer games, your character continually runs forward without stopping. Buttons (swipe controls are also available) on the left side of the screen allow you to jump and slide over and under various obstacles, such as ill-placed metal objects and fire pits. Another button on the right side of the screen controls your sword, which is used to dispatch aliens while running.
Hitting an obstacle, an alien, or a flying object will result in a loss of health, and you can only get hit twice before it’s game over. Luckily the game is organized into levels, so if you do die, you get to restart at the section where you ended the game. This prevents the game from being tedious, though if you do like infinite mode, there’s one of those too.
The object of the game is to get as far as possible, and to collect experience, which comes from passing checkpoints, killing aliens, and collecting stars. When you do die, you can use the experience you’ve earned to level up abilities. You can buy things like more health, different jump abilities, and special attacks. Experience can also be used to unlock later levels and to purchase different outfits for Cornelius.
A lot of the charm of this game comes from the environment, which has a futuristic arcade look with plenty of science fiction references. There are a wide variety of obstacles to overcome, which will keep you on your toes at all times, and power-ups also help to keep the gameplay dynamic. At the end of every six levels, there’s a boss fight.
Don’t Run With a Plasma Sword is an action-packed infinite runner that fans of the genre won’t want to miss out on. Fantastic retro-styled graphics, a humorous storyline, and dynamic content make this game a joy to play.
What I liked: There were a bunch of different objects and power-ups, which meant that there were several combinations of things I could be doing at any given time. This kept the game from getting boring, and I also enjoyed leveling up as a way to make levels progressively easier.
What I didn’t like: I immediately regretted buying one of the skill ups – the one that makes you dash in the air when you swing your sword. On more than one occasion I needed to dispatch an enemy and then jump to avoid falling off of a building, which was rendered impossible after purchasing the skill. I think some of the abilities and and obstacles need a bit of fine tuning.
To buy or not to buy: If you’ve enjoyed other infinite runner games, then you’re likely to have a lot of fun with this one as well. It’s a good little game won’t disappoint.
