Cut the Buttons HD is a Scrappy Addition to Casual Gaming – iPad App Review

Cut the Buttons HD for iPad offers simple, intuitive game play that departs from the subject matter typically found in casual gaming for iOS. Don’t worry, you don’t need to be a seamstress to appreciate this game, or even to succeed at playing it. Rather the game relies on the player’s quick reaction to snip as many buttons as possible into a cup during a round.
Cut the Buttons HD earns high marks for its realistic UI. The fabric scraps and buttons are charming. It is nice to see a subject matter for a casual game that draws from something besides the heavily masculine worlds of fantasy and warfare. The buttons also give a satisfying clink when they fall into the cup.

The game’s scissors are the star of the show. The scissor are amazingly responsive, and the player can even use them to control where the buttons land. They are, however, almost sure to induce carpal tunnel syndrome in the user if the game is played regularly.

There is little strategy involved in game play. There are two game modes. In classic mode the game continues until the player has let three scraps pass with buttons remaining on them, which is harder than it sounds. Arcade mode tests how many buttons the player can remove in a set period of time. Bonus points are awarded for cutting multiple buttons in a row, but players must avoid the bolted buttons, or risk losing points.

The game includes single and multiplayer modes and is Game Center enabled. Multiplayer mode adds a new dynamic to the game since the two players, while competing for the same buttons, are essentially engaged in a scissor fight — something that would never be allowed in real life.
Children may respond to getting a chance to use scissors and cut to their heart’s content. It might also be beneficial for anyone, young or old, who is struggling with fine motor coordination. It wouldn’t be surprising to learn that Cut the Buttons HD could hold benefits similar to those found for stroke victims who played Fruit Ninja.
Cut the Buttons HD is available for download in the App store for $1.99.

What I liked: Navigating Cut the Buttons HD’s interface was seamless, and I enjoyed the different fabric and buttons depicted in the game.

What I didn’t like: The game play quickly becomes repetitive since all the player is doing is cutting buttons, while avoiding those that are bolted.

To buy or not to buy: Although it’s not obvious who the target audience is for Cut the Buttons HD, the game is worth a try for iPad users who are looking for something a little different, or for anyone who is yearning for a virtual scissor fight.
