iPad Could Soon Become a Full-Blown Cash Register

ShopKeep, a startup based in New York, has raised $2.2 million in financing to fund its software that will turn Apple’s iPad into a cash register.

Currently, ShopKeep runs on a PC connected with a cash drawer, a credit card swiper, and a printer, which allows a merchant to record transactions, keep track of inventory, and print receipts, even when there’s no internet connection.

An iPad version was also released in mid-2010, and work on the software will continue thanks to the funding the company, valued at $10 million, received from Tribeca Venture Partners and TTV capital.

ShopKeep was founded when Jason Richelson, co-owner of the Greene Grape wine and gourmet food store, had trouble with point-of-sale software and set out to deliver something simpler and more reliable. Unlike other point-of-sale systems which can cost thousands per month, ShopKeep’s simple system costs just $50.

While the software isn’t sophisticated enough to run large scale bars or restaurants, it is perfect for smaller retailers and quick-serve food establishments. With just an iPad, a cash drawer, and a credit card swiper, small businesses can set up a viable, working point-of-sale system that is cheap, easy to use, and stable.
