iPad and Tablet Adoptions Leads to Record Sales Decline in PCs

As consumers continue to adopt tablets and other non-PC alternatives, PC sales are beginning to slowly decline. In the fourth quarter of 2011, worldwide PC shipments totaled 92.2 million units, which sounds like a lot, but is actually a 1.4 percent decline from the fourth quarter of 2010.
According to the data provided by Gartner, Inc., low consumer demand during the holidays led to weak holiday shipments. Shoppers this year were more interested in devices like the iPad and the Kindle Fire.

With the many keyboard cases on the market, it’s easy for an iPad to transform into a viable PC alternative. With the right combination of apps, an iPad user can do almost everything that a PC user can do. Want to write a document? No problem with pages. Need to edit photos? Snapseed’s got you covered. Need to create and edit PDFs? There’s an app for that too.
It’s really no surprise that the iPad has caused PC sales to flag a bit, since it is a device that is able to do nearly everything. As tablets continue to increase in power and functionality, we may see even more of a decline in PC sales.
Ultrabooks, a new class of ultra-thin notebook computer may be the PC’s saving grace. While they began slowly trickling out during the last few months of the year, Ultrabooks are going to catch on with a vengeance after their appearance at this month’s Consumer Electronics Show, where several have debuted.
At the moment, HP is still selling the most PCs at 14.7 million, with Lenovo in second place (13 million) and Dell coming in third (11.6 million). Acer and Asus came in fourth and fifth, with 9.8 million and 6.2 million, respectively.

Will the Ultrabook put the PC back on the map? We won’t know until later this year, but the high-performing razor thin notebooks have a fighting chance.
