Getting a good picture of a group of people is sometimes not the easiest or most fun experience. Especially when dealing with little kids. Inevitably little Johnny won’t sit still long enough for two seconds and as soon as he does, someone else turns their head away from the camera and ruins the picture. I’m happy to report that those frustrating days are gone with GroupShot. This app will magically cut and merge pieces from a set of similar pictures together to make the perfect picture.

GroupShot is very easy to use and I’m really amazed at how well it works. When we take a group picture, chances are we typically take 3 or 4 shots just for good measure. But somehow something goes wrong in each shot. The app gives us the option to take pictures from within the app itself or take pictures with the stock camera and then import them. Once the set of pictures are taken or imported, simply select them all and the app will present the first shot taken in the main frame. All that’s left to do after that is to paint over the pieces that we want to replace and select the part of the new picture that we want to use from a new picture in the set. Then the app works its magic and viola, we have the perfect picture.

The GroupShot interface is very smart and intuitive. There are no complicated filters or settings to mess around with to get it to work. As long as the set of pictures are taken from the relative same position, it’s almost hard to mess up merging several elements of different pictures together. The app is even nice enough to include two different sets of pictures that we can use to practice before attempting to edit our own pictures.

I don’t really have too many complaints about this app. If I did have to change one thing, I would add in the ability to change the thickness of the brush that selects the elements of the pictures we want to cut and replace. The thick brush makes it a little hard to accurately highlighted unwanted elements. As a result some parts of the final picture can be blurred.

Overall I’m very impressed with GroupShot. The developers have made it easy for everyone to do fairly complex photo edits all from a simple interface on an iPhone. As if that wasn’t magical enough, it’s only $0.99 in the App Store. So no matter how many times Johnny moves around during a family picture, we don’t have to worry because we can just cut and replace him using the one picture when he finally cooperated. Now that’s magic.
