AT&T to Rollout More Expensive iPhone and iPad Data Plans this Sunday

Wireless data usage has surged in recent months, as more and more consumers use their smartphones and tablets for downloading content like movies and apps, and for video streaming.

When Sunday, January 22nd rolls around, AT&T will be launching new data plans for the iPhone and the iPad 3G, allowing for more data at a slightly higher cost.

Currently, AT&T smartphone customers pay $14.99 per month for a 200MB data plan, which is transforming into a 300MB plan for $19.99. $24.99 currently nets you 2GB of data, but that will change to 3GB for $30.

Tablet users pay $24.99 for 2GB, which will become $30 for 3GB, and the $50 for 5GB plan will remain the same. AT&T’s prices have been raised, but overall, it’s a lower cost per byte that will be worthwhile for customers who need just a bit more data.

“Customers are using more data than ever before,” sad David Christopher, chief marketing officer for AT&T Mobility. “Our new plans are driven by this increasing demand in a highly competitive environment to continue to deliver a great value to customers.”

Don’t worry, AT&T is not forcing anyone to change their plans. You can keep your existing data plan and avoid upgrading. According to Mark Collins, AT&T’s SVP for Voice and Data Product, “Existing customers will be able to keep their current plans but can also choose from one of the new plans.”
