The iPad’s first competitor of the new year has been released and it’s starting to pop up online and in stores. You’ll find the highly anticipated
Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime in stores like Office Depot and Best Buy, at the price of $499 for 32GB of storage or $599 for 64 GB of storage.
Asus’s Transformer Prime is one hot tablet, with its ultra thin, sleek design and its accompanying keyboard dock. And not only does it look nice, this tablet is packing some serious power, with the NVIDIA Tegra 3 SoC that makes it the first quad-core tablet.
At a width of 8.3mm, the Transformer Prime is thinner than both the iPad 2 and the Galaxy Tab 10.1, and it also features a Super IPS+ display with Gorilla Glass and a 1280×800 resolution (the iPad 2’s is 1024×768). It has an eight megapixel rear camera, a 1.2 megapixel front camera, and it promises to run Ice Cream Sandwich with an update.
Like the iPad 2, the Transformer Prime has an aluminum backing/lid, available in both amethyst grey and champagne gold, so these two tablets look similar (they’re the same shape), though the Prime weighs less. Unlike the iPad 2, the Prime with its dock has a USB 2.0 socket, a MicroSD slot, and an SD card reader, which go a long way towards making it a suitable laptop replacement. With a 16 and a half hour battery life (with the dock -10.5 without), the Prime demolishes its competition, including the iPad 2, which has a 10 and a half hour battery life.
Needless to say, this tablet outclasses the iPad 2 (in terms of raw stats – there are some usage complaints), but it is unfair to compare a tablet that’s nearly a year old with one that’s just been released. The real comparison will come when Apple releases its next generation iPad.
If its a high class Android tablet you’re after – this is the one to get. It is, unquestionably, the best Android tablet available at this time.
The only problem? It’s got a hefty price tag, at $499 for 32GB
plus another $149 for its keyboard dock. If you can stomach the price, you can order this powerhouse of a tablet
right now at Office Depot (as a pre-order, which is not a bad idea since people are snapping these up left and right). It’s labeled wrong as the Transformer, but its product number is the correct TF201.
Best Buy was selling these last week, and should have more stock shortly.
