App Downloads Skyrocketed During Last Week of 2011

Did you download an app or 20 over the holidays? Looks like you weren’t alone. According to Flurry, a mobile analytics firm, Android and Apple app stores enjoyed over 1.2 billion downloads in the last week of 2011. Sure there were a lot of us with a little downtime looking at a few new apps, but chances are good that this record-setting week of downloads is due in large part to the 20 million new activations seen by both platforms over the holidays.
I have to admit that with my daughter getting her first iPod Touch for Christmas and my new Android tablet I probably made my fair-share contribution to these statistics! Particularly as we booted them up Christmas morning, like many of you, and participated in the nearly 242 million application downloads that happened on that day alone.
The side-note here of course is that the app stores seemed to handle this surge with ease. I can’t speak for all of you but there was no apparent issues with any of our devices as we updated them and added apps. This is impressive and suggestive of a well-built infrastructure for both platforms.
Normally the biggest surge in spending can be expected in the weeks leading up to the holidays so this is a new trend that is emerging. With this, people are receiving gifts (whether from loved ones or treating themselves) that they then want to load up with content. This is good news for developers who might otherwise have seen lean times after the over-spending many of us do over this season.
The data Flurry uses comes from over 140,000 apps that take advantage of their analytics tools, boasting being able to identify over 90% of the new device activations each day.
This information does raise a few questions that remain unanswered, like how many of these downloads were a version of Angry Birds?
