There are certainly no lack of photo editing apps available, but generally we are all pretty much used to seeing them in a limited or simplified version. Most photo editing apps available offer a few simple options with a straight forward and easy to use interface. Sometimes, even Adobe’s official Photoshop.com App doesn’t offer everything I’d like it to. Well, users needn’t worry about lack of editing options and filters with Amopic; if anything, they are over reaching trying to create a full program run on a very small device. In the end, this may very well be its downfall.
While Amopic may be one of the most comprehensive photo-editing apps in its price range, users may have a hard time understanding everything they can do with it since there’s no help or instructions at all. Diving in blind, and using only the feature list in its app description on iTunes, I was able to muddle around for a few minutes and get a feel for how it functions. It boasts of many filters, effects and and editing tools your photos right on your iPhone, and if users can figure out which buttons do what, they do really work quite well.
Unfortunately, since users are working on such a small screen, they’ll spend most of their time fighting against multiple open windows, behind which the actual photo you’re trying to change is barely visible. Credit needs to be given to the developers for their ambition. This app still offers a lot more than most that I’ve come across in terms of full featured editing software. If users can manage to figure out what all the different effects and options do, they’ll actually have a pretty decent editor here, with color-grading effects, lighting, embossing and of course blur/sharpen adjustments. Sadly, when it comes to text and paintbrush options, I honestly feel it is nearly unusable.
Being that user interface and lack of support documentation is the only problem I really had Amopic, I am unsure why the developers didn’t think to release this only on the iPad where space and detailed maneuverability wouldn’t be a problem. They do have an iPad version, but it’s much pricier (see below), they also have an “HD” version for iPhone 4 and higher – priced a dollar more than the original, which allows users to open larger photos and use zoom. At the very least, offer only the HD version, and make it a universal app! It’s a shame, really.
Overall I would have to say that it’s not quite a good fit for the iPhone. There are higher quality apps available for those willing to pay the iPad price. Ones that come with instructions.
