Flurry Analytics charts app downloads and mobile devices activated each day, and this year’s Christmas research has proven to be the highest ever, doubling, and sometimes tripling in numbers for the actual holiday from activity over the previous month.
Apple is poised to reach its milestone of 10 billion apps downloaded any day now.
According to Flurry’s analysis, there was a 353 percent increase in mobile device activation on Christmas day compared to December 1-20. These devices include iPhones, iPads, iPod touches and Android-based products. December 25 saw 6.8 million mobile devices activated, which is four million more than the same day last year.
With all these new devices, app downloads soared to record highs. Christmas day saw and increase of 125 percent over the month of December with 242 million downloads in a single day.  Flurry notes that relative to the percentage increase in device activations, the app download is extremely high.  “This is because of the sizable device installed base in the market onto which apps are constantly downloaded.  This keeps the baseline higher vis a vis the Christmas peak.”  Christmas day 2011 more than doubled any other day in the history of iOS and Android devices except Christmas Eve, which had 150 million in one day.

Interestingly, app downloads peaked between approximately 7 P.M. and 9 P.M. on Christmas day at over 15 million.  According to Flurry, between 7P.M. and 10 P.M. is the “Prime Time” slot for daily downloads. People are settled in for the evening, reading PadGadget to see what new app to buy.

On Christmas day, millions of new mobile device users were slowing down their festivities, taking a moment to register their phones and tablets. Plenty of family members were probably recommending their favorite apps. All was right in the world.
