iPad 3 Rumors: Samsung Gets Shunned, Sharp Gets Interest from Apple for Display

According to Gigaom, Apple is shopping around for new friends in the supply industry. The iPad maker and Samsung Electronics have not been playing nice with each other all year, and now Sharp is benefiting from the falling-out.
Gigaom reported that Jefferies analyst Peter Misek took a trip to Japan and noticed that Sharp is picking up some extra work as a result of Apple and Samsung’s public turmoil, “Picking up impressive windfalls in terms of share of iPad 3, iPhone 5 LTE and iTV display production.” Of course, all of the above-mentioned gadgets are still nothing more than rumors, so who knows if Misek’s information is solid or not.
Jefferies also revised its estimated iPad sales for the fourth quarter of 2011from 17 million to 14 million following reports that Apple was reducing its iPad component orders. Jeffries was quick to state that it believes,  “reports have overstated the iPad weakness as they have not accounted for inventory at Hon Hai [Foxconn], iPad 3 production starting in CQ4 [fourth calendar quarter] and Sharp’s share gain.”
While Apple seems to be building relationships with other suppliers, Samsung is still a large supplier of display screens and as recently as this November, orders were submitted by the iPad maker. It looks like these “frienemies” will just have to keep their cool if they want to continue to hog the monkey bars together.
