Doodlecast for Kids Turns Drawings into Videos – iPad App Review

Doodlecast for Kids by zinc Roe Games is a universal app for iOS that lets kids (or even adults) make videos of their drawings which they can play back and watch again and again.
Doodlecast couldn’t be easier to use. To begin creating your own Doodlecast simply open the app. The user may choose from a drawing template or bubble word sentiment to get the creative juices flowing.

The word bubbles are just a starting point, they will lead users to a blank screen, but the app will insert a title screen during video playback that includes the word inside the bubble. So if a child chooses the word “messy” his video will be called “What Looks Messy.”

The drawing templates add a traceable image such as an empty plate or street that can be filled with whatever the child wishes. For a completely blank template choose the star. Videos made with the star template will not have a title screen added to them during playback.
Doodlecast begins recording as soon as the user opens the template, so there is never a need to remember to press record. Users can watch their videos immediately after creating them from within the app, or tap “save” to export the video to the camera roll.
Doodlecast for Kids is available for download on the App Store for the introductory price of $0.99.

What I liked: Doodlecast for Kids’ premise is simple, yet it offers something new to the field of kids’ edu-apps.

What I didn’t like: The drawing interface was extremely basic. It would benefit from an eraser, so children didn’t have to choose between keeping a mistake in a drawing or erasing the entire drawing and starting over. Drawing with the iPad in ones lap led to muffled sound quality, so for best results make sure the microphone isn’t picking up background noise.

To buy or not to buy: Doodlecast for Kids is novel. It’s approach encourages parents and children to draw and perhaps even create stories together. It’s current sale price makes it well-worth checking out.
